Why we’re challenging Ofgem’s Long Duration Energy Storage scheme

7th November 2025 – London, UK

We fully support the UK Government’s ambition to deliver affordable, clean and secure energy for households and businesses. Long duration energy storage (LDES) will play an important role in achieving that goal, alongside battery storage, which remains essential to integrating renewables and reducing system costs.

We are concerned that aspects of the proposed LDES scheme could unintentionally disrupt markets on which storage has already established itself as cost-effective and competitive. This would increase costs for consumers. We have previously raised concerns about the design of the LDES scheme through consultations and direct engagement with the regulator and government without sufficient engagement. As the scheme now moves toward implementation, it is important to ensure these issues are properly examined.

As a result, we’re asking Ofgem to carry out the necessary steps associated with the UK’s subsidy control regime. Our actions are intended to improve the policy process and ensure that support for long duration energy storage delivers lasting value for consumers and the wider energy transition.

We continue to engage with the Government and Ofgem to ensure that future support mechanisms deliver a balanced and competitive market which provides value for consumers and works towards Government’s Clean Power 2030 goals.
