Zenobē provided an end-to-end, fully funded solution for bus operator National Express. This solution seamlessly utilises recycled bus battery cells in an onsite battery energy storage system.

The challenge

Birmingham-based multinational transport operator National Express Group plans to be a zero carbon bus company by 2030. As part of this plan, National Express sought to electrify its depot in Coventry to reduce carbon emissions, lower the quantity of harmful particulates released into the atmosphere, reduce noise pollution and lower operating costs.

The solution

Zenobē developed an end-to-end solution for National Express including financing, batteries, chargers, and management software.

In addition to the many environmental and economic benefits of Zenobē’s turnkey solution, this project also seamlessly utilised recycled bus power cells which were no longer capable of being used on buses, repurposing them into a stationary battery solution to provide power to electric vehicles and thus greatly extend their useful life. The stationary battery is a Time Shift B.V. 1MW/1.2MWh battery with second life BYD cells that were originally from buses operating in the Nordics. This new application will allow the battery life to be extended by around 30%, resulting in less waste and lower replacement costs.

The outcome

The project delivered the first second-life battery application in the UK, reducing emissions, noise and operating costs while providing flexibility for the future.
